Algeria 2023 U17: Golden Eaglets beat Zambia 1-0 in first match

Two-time champions Nigeria picked all three points in a 1-0 win over Zambia to commence their Africa U17 Cup of Nations in Algeria on a promising note on Sunday.

Favour Daniel struck powerfully past the Zambian goal-tender from a goalmouth melee 14 minutes to the end in Algeria’s second city, giving Nigeria all points in a largely average encounter that opened the campaign in Group B.

Nigeria dominated proceedings at the Stade Mohamed Hamlaoui but ineffective short passes and poor shooting in front of goal denied them an avalanche of goals against a Zambian team that failed to bite.

Both teams hit the woodwork in the first period and Abubakar Abdullahi saw his efforts saved twice as Nigeria piled on the pressure.

The five-time world champions were set to take a two-goal win into their clash with Morocco on Wednesday but substitute Light Eke made light work of a penalty kick awarded two minutes into additional time and gave the goalkeeper no worries.

Nigeria defender Yahaya Lawali was named Man of the Match.

After their encounter with Morocco on Wednesday evening, the Eaglets will play South Africa in their final match of Group B on Saturday.

The four top-placed teams at the 12-nation finals will represent Africa at this year’s FIFA U17 World Cup.

FA Cup final: Don’t play like Arsenal – Neville warns Man Utd

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has revealed why manager Erik ten Hag is leaving Fred on the bench.

Nevile also said winning the FA Cup is possible for Manchester United as long as they do not approach the final the same way Arsenal did during their Premier League match last Wednesday.

Manchester City defeated Arsenal 4-1 during a crunch encounter and would be four points clear of the current league leaders should they win their two games in hand.

Manchester City will play in the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they face Real Madrid and will take on United at Wembley at the start of June.

City now have a famous treble in their sights but Nevlle would like his former club to spoil the party for Pep Guardiola’s side.

He believed that the Red Devils could cause a major upset for Pep Guardiola’s team if they deploy the right tactics and formation.

“I think United have probably got more chances than Real Madrid in a one-off game at Wembley.

The centre-backs [Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez] will be back,” Neville told The Overlap.

“Doing what Arsenal did with the three in midfield that were attacking [was the wrong move]. We need to be a bit more [defensive].”

Speaking on why Brazil international Fred has been used sparingly in recent games, the former England international said: “He’s left Fred out for the last few months because he wants Eriksen.

“I’ve got a little bit of an insight into why Fred’s not playing, Sabitzer is playing because he can hold [the ball].”

Manchester United managed a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday to keep their hopes of finishing within the top four teams alive.

Manchester City, on the other hand, beat Fulham 2-1 to leapfrog Arsenal in the title race. Arsenal will return to the top of the table with a victory over struggling Chelsea on Monday. However, Man City still have two more games to play.

EPL: You won’t be successful at Chelsea – Ex-Tottenham star tells Pochettino

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O’Hara has predicted the worst for Mauricio Pochettino if the Argentine takes over as Chelsea’s new manager.

O’Hara said that the former Tottenham manager will not be a good fit for the Blues, adding that the Argentine boss is a Spurs man through and through.

Following the sack of Graham Potter, the Blues have been in the market in search of a perfect head coach to leave them to glory next season.

In doing so, the west London side put club’s legend Frank Lampard in charge until the end of the season but the former Everton boss has lost all five matches in charge.

Multiple reports in England indicated that Pochettino, a former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager, has been selected for the job but O’Hara told talkSPORTS that the former Tottenham boss’ stint at Stamford Bridge will not work out.

“I don’t think it’ll work because he is Spurs,” he said.

“The reason I don’t think it’ll work is because Chelsea are still in the mindset of winning at all costs. If you don’t win then you’re out.”

Rivers: Abe withdraws petition against victory of PDP from tribunal

The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, in the just concluded elections in Rivers State, Senator Magnus Abe has withdrawn his petition at the Election Petition Tribunal against the victory of Siminalayi Fubara of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Senator Abe disclosed this when he was addressing party leaders at his campaign office in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

The former senator said his decision to withdraw the petition against PDP’s Fubara was in the interest of Rivers people.

He said: “I know it has not been easy and at a time like this, to go with bare hands against dollars, naira and euros, to go with bare hands, against guns and knives. And all you have is your faith and conviction that this is the right thing to do.

“A lot of our people went through so much trauma, so much hell, but it is to the glory of God that we are alive today.”

He dismissed claims by Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, that he was de-marketing the state with his comments after the election, as well as seeking appointment under the administration of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu.

Abe insisted that the activities of members of the PDP at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, after the election as well as the killings during and after elections are the kinds of actions that de-market the state.

“I was sent news stories of a story credited to the Rivers State Government to the effect that, I, Senator Abe, was going around de-marketing Rivers State because I’m looking for appointment.

“Part of the challenges that we are facing in this state is our inability to face reality. There are 36 states in this county and there are thousands of election petition matters all across the country.

“But it was only in Rivers State that lawyers stayed in a hotel, trying to put things together to take their case to court that they brought police to harass them, arrest them, intimidate them in the hotel in the state.

“Those kinds of actions de-market Rivers State. It’s not what I say that de-markets the state,” he said.

Senator Abe commended President Muhammadu Buhari for commissioning the Ogoni Power Project which he said is a manifestation of the President’s campaign promises.

He, however, appealed to the President to address the issue of fuel subsidy, noting that the postponement of the issue is not in the interest of the Nigerian people.

Transform Southeast into Dubai – Ohanaeze tasks Tinubu, S’East govs

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has urged the President-elect, Bola Tinubu and incoming state governors of the Southeast to transform the region into the “Dubai” of West Africa.

Ohanaeze’s Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, made the call in response to a proposed move by Southwest states to launch a regional railway line and electricity projects.

Isiguzoro said Tinubu’s administration and those of the incoming governors should establish rail lines across Owerri, Onitsha, Awka and Abakaliki.

Speaking with DAILY POST, Isiguzoro said: “Ohanaeze is calling on the new governors from the Southeast and that of Imo and Anambra to take drastic measures to ensure that rail line passes through Owerri, Onitsha, Awka, and Abakaliki.

“Ohanaeze is taking a lead role in ensuring that there is a rail connection from the commercial nerve centre of the Southeast, Aba, to Owerri to Onitsha where there is a dry seaport.

“But there is no connection between Enugu to Abakaliki. We are challenging the new governors to ensure that by January 2024 we must have achieved 80 per cent of these regional railway lines and electricity.”

He also said further: “We want to congratulate the Abia State Governor for building a geometric power plant in Aba through Professor Nnagi which has been providing electricity for the SMEs and lighting up Aba and its environs.
“We also commend the Ebonyi State governor for the International Airport that would create employment and business opportunities for the people of the state. We are looking at these industrial revolutions that, if properly managed by the incoming administration of Southeast governors, like the regional railway and electricity designed by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, will transform the Southeast into Dubai and the centre of attraction of West Africa.”

According to him, this agenda cannot be achieved without the support of the incoming Tinubu administration.

Isiguzoro added: “Ohanaeze is urging our people to stop the spirit of antagonism which has turned our region into a horrible place. Most of the marginalisation cry is done by external factors.

“We must end the marginalisation mentality and have a productive mentality. We should form alliances with the moving train.”

Ogun tribunal: NNPP withdraws petition against Abiodun, INEC

The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, in Ogun State has withdrawn the petition it filed against Governor Dapo Abiodun and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

DAILY POST reported earlier that the NNPP had approached the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Ogun, alleging that its name and logo were not on the ballot papers used for the March 18 election.

The petition, marked EPT/OG/GOV/01/2023, was filed by the chairman of the NNPP in Ogun, Olaposi Oginni, seeking the total cancellation of the election.

Addressing newsmen in Abeokuta on Sunday, Oginni disclosed that the NNPP had filed a notice of discontinuance of the petition at the tribunal.

According to Oginni, the same ballot papers used in Ogun were also used in Kano State where the NNPP gubernatorial candidate defeated the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

“The petition is now dead and buried. As a party, we will go back to the drawing board ahead of 2027 and we hope to get it right,” he said, adding that if the petition survives, it would alter the political calendar of Ogun State and bring disruption to the political system in the state.

Over 2,500 Nigeria students trapped inside Sudan university – Old students raise alarm

The Sudan Old Students Association of Nigeria, SOSAN, has raised the alarm that over 2,500 undocumented Nigerian students are trapped inside the Sudan/African University without food, water and money.

Speaking shortly after offering special prayers for the safety of the students, the President of the association, Aliyu Abdulkadir Abdulkadir, said that they had received distress calls from the students that their lives are in extreme danger.

He said as it is now, even the 5,000 students said to have been transported to Egypt are still at the border as they were not cleared to enter the country, while some were dropped in the bush by their bus drivers for not paying their money.

Abdulkadir lamented that even the money said to have been set aside for the evacuation of the students is being tampered with, leaving hundreds of the students in extreme danger inside Khartoum.

He said, “reports reaching us is that right now although there is no case of losing lives, but some female students are said to be raped while gun battles have already reached within the university”.

Another old student of the Sudan University, Gambo Ado, said that still, they have students at the Sudan International University of Africa who are stranded. He said most are women and have no food or shelter.

He said they have already reported the matter of the undocumented students to the government.

“For now there is no single voice speaking for the Nigerian students, monies sent to them did not reach them and most of them even sent their clips in the bushes shouting for help,” he said.

EPL: Man City go top after 2-1 win at Fulham

Manchester City have displaced Arsenal from the summit of the Premier League table after sealing a 2-1 victory away to Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Erling Haaland bagged his 50th goal of the season from a spot-kick three minutes into the match to give City the lead.

City’s celebration was, however, cut short following Carlos Vinicius’ equalizer in the 15th minute.

Julian Alvarez put the visitors back in front with a stunning shot outside the box in the 36th minute.

Alvarez’s 15th strike of the season makes him Man City’s second-highest goalscorer after the Norweigan center forward.

Pep Guardiola’s men aren’t only above Arsenal but have also withered Fulham’s chances of qualifying for any European competition.

The Cottagers are eight points from the UEFA Europa Conference League spot currently held by Liverpool who are a game less.
