AFCON 2023: I target fourth title with Nigeria – Peseiro insists

Jose Peseiro has once again reiterated his desire to guide the Super Eagles to glory at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Three-time winners, Nigeria will be looking to win a fourth title in Cote d’Ivoire.

The Super Eagles will be up against the hosts, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea in Group A.

The West Africans last tasted success on the continent in 2013.

Peseiro is however upbeat his team can emerge the best team on the continent again.

“My experience with the Nigerian national team is very good. Being part of African and Nigerian football is an interesting thing, and I cannot deny that,” said Peseiro as quoted by KORAPLUS.

“I told everyone that I wanted to win the Africa Cup of Nations from the first moment I signed the contract with the Nigerian national team, and we study our opponents well in order to win, and this is what we seek to achieve.”

The Super Eagles will start their preparation for the competition in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates next week Tuesday.

EPL: VAR under fire as Arsenal play 1-1 draw with Liverpool

VAR official, David Coote has come under criticism following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Arsenal on Saturday.

Reds boss, Jurgen Klopp, speaking after the game said a “guy in an office” should have awarded a penalty following a Martin Odegaard handball during the first half.

The Gunners will be top of the Premier League table at Christmas following the result.

Mohamed Salah cancelled out Gabriel’s fourth-minute opener, and the point leaves Liverpool second, one point behind the Gunners.

But Klopp said his team should have been awarded a penalty in the 19th minute after Odegaard appeared to block Salah’s path to the ball by handling in the 18-yard box.

Referee, Chris Kavanagh allowed play to continue and VAR did not stop the match for a check.

Coote deemed that Odegaard handled the ball while falling.

“Yes I have seen it,” Klopp said.

“I am pretty sure someone will come to explain to me why it was not a handball but I don’t know how.

Ballon d’Or rankings: Mikel Arteta sets challenge for two Arsenal players

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has challenged Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka to finish even higher next time on the Ballon d’Or ranking after the pair made it to the final top 30 nominees.

Arteta spoke at his pre-match press conference ahead of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup tie with West Ham United on Wednesday.

Recall that Messi won this year’s Ballon d’Or ahead of the likes of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain forward, Kylian Mbappe, who finished in second and third place, respectively on Monday night in Paris.

Saka and Odegaard both received their first-ever nominations for the award, finishing a joint-28th and 24th on the 30-man list.

Asked if he had spoken to his players who made the Ballon d’Or list, Arteta told reporters: “Yeah, pride is always good, to look at yourselves next to those names and in those lists.

“So it’s a compliment for them, for what they’ve done. And now the challenge is to be higher up the list next season – because that would mean that you’ve done it again.”

Former UFC champion, Francis Ngannou has insisted that he won his boxing match against Tyson Fury despite the split decision favouring the Briton.

Speaking in a post-match interview with IU, the Cameroonian star said he knew that if the match comes to decision he was not going to win because it was his debut.

Ngannou said, “If he [Fury] is being honest, he would say I won that fight. I won that fight, there’s no question about it.

January Transfer: Liverpool reach personal terms with Osimhen

According to a UK tabloid, paisleygates, English Premier League side, Liverpool, have reached personal terms with Nigeria international, Victor Osimhen, ahead of next season’s transfer move.

Liverpool have been after Osimhen for some time and the latest reports indicate they have agreed terms of a contract to sign the Nigerian international from Napoli.

According to Valter De Maggio, the African striker opted not to extend his contract with the Italian champions and has agreed to join the Reds.

“The president refers to a meeting that took place in Castel di Sangro. The parties had reached an agreement for the renewal, but then Calenda and Osimhen went back on their word.”

“What happened? There was the inclusion of another club, from the Premier League. I’m talking about Liverpool. There would be frequent contacts, but I just learned something else: there would be agreements already reached. Let me clarify: the agreements would be between the Reds and the player, therefore they would not involve Napoli.”

Osimhen won the Paolo Rossi award in the last campaign and netted 31 goals in all competitions for Napoli. Still, he earns a relatively low salary of £75,000 a week.

After a terrific season, the Scudetto winners valued him at around £154m in the summer transfer window but the price has now dropped.

According to a report covered by Calcio Mercato yesterday, club president, Aurelio de Laurentiis, hopes to get a fee of around £87m from the sale of his prized asset.

The 24-year-old has netted 20 goals in 27 appearances for Nigeria and is one of the best goal-scorers in the game at the moment.

Jorginho is Chelsea’s biggest transfer mistake of the Boehly era

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva spoke of his shock that Jorginho was allowed to leave for Arsenal during the January transfer window in a deal that could low-key be the worst of the Todd Boehly era at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have been criticised for their big spending on young players over the course of the last 18 months, but while few of these stars have hit the ground running, there is at least an opportunity for them to turn their Chelsea careers around.

It is often cited that there is a lack of leadership, though, around Stamford Bridge, and offloading the experienced Jorginho to Arsenal in a surprise January deal worth just €11.3 million deprived the Blues of that valuable quality.

The 31-year-old had spent more than four years at Chelsea, playing over 200 matches for the club before being transferred across London for a fee that was significantly below his Expected Transfer Value (xTV) of €18m.

Although a relatively unspectacular player in terms of what he did in midfield, Thiago Silva explained in an interview with ESPN Brasil that Jorginho brought a good deal more to the Blues than might have been apparent and admits he was shocked the transfer was completed.

“It was for a direct rival, but these are football things, it happens. He wanted to stay in England because he has family here. There are things that we have no control over, but we have to understand the player’s side of things,” the centre-back explained.

“I know we have a lot of work ahead of us, especially as we have lost one of our great leaders in the dressing room. Jorginho is a guy who spoke a lot and this hole will remain, but we have to move on. We didn’t expect him to leave, but it has happened. We have to make up for his absence in the best possible way.”

Jorginho’s influence being felt at Arsenal

And though Jorginho has struggled to break into the Arsenal team, marquee summer signing Declan Rice has underlined his importance to the club.

“The one who surprised me so much, not surprised because I knew he was such a good player anyway. Playing with him every day in training and seeing how he is because he’s not the biggest is Jorginho,” he said.

“His brain, the way it works as a holding midfielder, I’ve just been trying to pick up little things off of him. He’s always in position, he always knows when to pass, always creates time for himself, he’s an outstanding trainer.”

This is just why Arteta signed a player who is now pushing into the twilight of his career.

FootballTransfers exclusively revealed in September that Jorginho is happy with his role at the club but, perhaps more crucially, that Arteta sees the midfielder as integral to the club’s next stage of development.

His value away from the field is seen as precious for the Gunners while he is seen as a steady hand to come into the team as the fixtures pile up.

In many ways, Jorginho sums up the differing approach of the two London clubs in the transfer market: Chelsea have gone all in on youth, whereas Arsenal have opted for a more balanced strategy.

So far it is the Gunners who are coming out on top, with the smart addition of Jorginho one of the reasons. Chelsea could really use an old head like him.

I want to see my players sad – Pochettino reacts to 2-2 draw with Arsenal

Chelsea boss, Mauricio Pochettino, has bemoaned his side’s failure to defeat Arsenal on Saturday.

The Blues threw away a two-goal advantage with 13 minutes left to draw 2-2 with the Gunners.

Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk gave Pochettino’s men the lead, but goals from Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard ensured Mikel Arteta’s men earned a point.

Pochettino, speaking to MOTD, said: “I think we lost two points. We are disappointed but you can not change the analysis and the judgement of the game. We were very competitive against a very good team fighting for the Premier League last season.

“We are a young team and I think the way we competed is a lot to be proud but we’re disappointed because after 77 minutes when we conceded the first goal I think we were better. The game was under control and we were playing well and dominating the game.

“But when you concede there is a risk. Yes, we’re disappointed but we have to take positive things. I wan to see my players sad because they lost two points. We are in a good direction. It’s important we show the people we can compete at this level.”
