Why Ahmed Wase should emerge HoR Speaker – Group appeals to APC
Former federal and state lawmakers from Plateau State have appealed to the leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC) to zone the Speaker of House of Representatives to the North-Central for equity, justice and fairness.
The former lawmakers under the aegis of the Concerned Former Senators, House of Representatives Members, Speakers and Members of the State House of Assembly from Plateau State also drummed support for the Deputy Speaker Idris Ahmed Wase to emerge as the speaker of the incoming 10th National Assembly.
The group urged the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and members of the 10th House of Representatives to give maximum support to Wase for a robust Executive-Legislature relationship.
Addressing reporters in Jos, the Plateau State capital, leaders of the group, Senator Timothy Adudu and James Y. Ayuba said Wase’s ability to coordinate and canvass for the support of a vast majority of his colleagues towards achieving common positive goals stands him out as the potential Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives.
They said: “As a fifth-term legislator during which he has risen to the position of a Deputy Speaker, he has proven to be a strong pillar to be reckoned with, especially in the North-Central geopolitical zone. His legislative experience over the years has shaped him into a highly cherished and charismatic personality of high repute among his colleagues; elders, religious leaders across all faiths traditional rulers party stakeholders and the general public.
“He is humble, confident and very respectful, a very loyal party man to the core. His rare comportment, maturity, and tact in speech and conduct are qualities that are essential for the holders of the position of Speaker. This means he can rally his colleagues towards a common cause which will be in the overall interest of the country.
“This gentleman has distinguished himself as a true representative of the masses and a leader per excellence. Since his debut in the House of Representatives in 2007, he has sponsored several bills and motions which we may not be able to reel out here for lack of space and time but what we will say are verifiable.”
The group described Wase as a detribalised Nigerian and an honest gentleman. They added: “On the home front he has sponsored numerous bills, including the bill for the establishment of the Orthopedic Hospitals Management Board (Amendment) Bill, the Federal Medical Centre, Wase (Establishment) Bill, the National Institute for Sports Act (Amendment) Bill, the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (Establishment), the National Sports Commission Bill, the Nigeria Football Federation Bill, the National Housing Fund (Establishment) Bill, the Miscellaneous Offences Act (Repeal) Bill, Federal Commissions (Privileges and Immunities) Act (Amendment) Bill, Public Accounts Implementation Tribunal Act (Amendment) Bill, among others.
“Given these impeccable records of service, there is no gain in saying that Wase is undisputedly a foremost contender for the position of the Speaker of the 10th National Assembly having indicated interest for the position in the 9th Assembly before stepping down for the current Speaker. A mandate for Wase in this regard will be the right political decision for the party and the House of Representatives and for Nigeria’s democracy.
