Police seek court order to remand Seun in custody

Seun, the son of music legend, late Fela Kuti, may remain in custody longer than expected as the Police, on Tuesday morning, sought a court order to remand him in custody, pending when investigation into the assault on a policeman is concluded.

Seun was taken to the Yaba Court 1, this (Tuesday) morning.

Police sources explained that the action became necessary in order not to violate the constitutional duration of detention of suspects.

Besides, Police sources attributed the delay to Seun’s refusal to write a statement on the matter when he was taken to the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, SCIID, yesterday morning.

A source said: “Immediately the incident happened, the Police officer reported the matter.

“There was also a video of him (Seun) slapping and pushing the policeman on the Third Mainland Bridge.

“However, that is not enough to conclude the investigation. There is a need for him to state his side, as part of the investigation.

“But he refused to write his statement yesterday (Monday) morning when told to do so.”

Reacting to the development, Okechukwu Nwanguma, Executive Director, RULAAC, said: “Seun’s action is unjustifiable and inexcusable.

“But there are legally established procedures and safeguards for dealing with suspects of crime. Police is a higher calling and cannot descend to the level of the same suspects they have arrested for a crime.

“They should not act with vengeance. They should not go outside the law to enforce the law,” he added.
