I almost stop acting over sexual harassment – Mercy Aigbe

Mercy Aigbe, a popular Nollywood actress, has revealed how she nearly left the Nigerian film industry due to sexual harassment.

The actress revealed this while recounting her struggles on her climb to the top.

In an interview with Morayo Afolabi-Brown on ‘Your View,’ a TVC chat show, Aigbe described how a producer made advances at her following a movie audition despite landing the role in an upcoming film.

“I met a producer in Surulere, and I expressed to him how much I would love to act. He told me he had an upcoming film and invited me to his office for an audition in his office.

” After I had passed three stages of the audition, I was given a minor role, which I told him that was not the character I was auditioning for, and he replied that the director said he did not know me, and that was why he wanted me to be close to him,” she said.

“He then stood up to touch me. I was very upset and I thought if that was what it took to be an actress, I don’t want to be an actress anymore. I tore the script and left. I cried on my way going home because I left a well paying job to join Nollywood, and I was already a single mother at the time.”

Controversy trails performance of singer Portable at NBA concert

The performance of singer Portable at the ‘Unbarred’ concert, organised by the Nigerian Bar Association, has caused a stir on social media.

The programme was held on Thursday at the Velodrome of the MKO Abiola Stadium.

According to the event’s poster, the host was Timi Agbaje. DJ Skillz and Veentage Band were billed to man the music policy and it promised a surprise act.

Portable, however, turned out to be guest performer during the event.

Some netizens took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their thoughts on the performance of the controversial artiste at the NBA concert.

An X user, bearded_lawyah said, “I just want to see the genius at the Planning Committee meeting that thought it’d be a good idea to bring Portable to #Unbarred because if they aren’t high on Odogwu Bitters then they must be charge and bail lawyers because this thing no dey make sense no matter how you look am!”

Another user, marcel_great said, “As #NigBarAssoc has decided to embarrass the bar with their choice of artiste for the unbarred concert, let it be known that we will visit the issue during the next year’s election. What business does NBA have with Portable? #afamosigwe we will remind you.”

However, Metro Lawyer reports that though some lawyers walked out of the event on seeing Portable, others stayed behind to watch the singer perform.

Reacting to a purported video showing the alleged walkout by lawyers, @ndm01 said on Instagram, “I was here yesterday. This wasn’t about Portable. It was a breakout session on the ‘Rule of Law and the Military’… The Army General that anchored the Session denied ‘ENDSARS’ massacre and it was at that point that Lawyers in attendance staged this walkout.”

The Unbarred Concert is a live entertainment session organised for lawyers as part of the annual NBA conference.

It is the grand conference closing party and is held a day before the association’s annual general meeting.

2baba, Wande Coal, Teni, Bez, Brymo, Nini, Falz, Olamide and Ruger had performed at previous editions.

GWR breaks silence as more Nigerians attempt world records

The Guinness World Records (GWR) has issued a short statement to people attempting to break world records.

More Nigerians have been giving the GWR a shot since Hilda Baci edged out her predecessor to set a new time for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.

In May, Baci pulled off a 100-hour attempt to set a record for the longest cooking marathon.

The chef challenged the record of 87 hours 45 minutes previously set by Lata Tondon, an Indian, in 2019.

Following days of vetting by GWR, Baci was certified to have instead set a 93-hour record.

Shortly after Baci’s feat, Damilola Adeparusi, another chef, started her cooking marathon for a five-day stint.

Then came Adeyeye Adeola who also attempted to upturn Baci’s record in a 150-hour spell.

Also joining the fray, Temitope Adebayo, an Ibadan-based chef, went public with his intention to cook for more than 120 hours.

It also came as a shock to many when Hassan Joshua Bature, a computer science lecturer at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), announced plans to embark on 150-hour teaching marathon.

At about the same time when Joyce Ijeoma, the Nigerian masseur attempting to break the world record for the longest massage on different individuals, collapsed, GWR issued a very important reminder to participants.

In the short statement, the GWR advised participants to properly confirm with “our team” before attempting to break any world record.

“Polite reminder that you should probably have your world record title confirmed by our team before attempting it here’s how our process works,” it wrote.

GWR: Another Nigerian chef begins 150-hour cook-a-thon

Adeyeye Adeola, a talented Nigerian chef, has embarked on a remarkable culinary journey to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon (individual).

Adeola’s cook-a-thon began on Friday, June 30, 2023, in the Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State and is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, July 6, 2023.

This is coming after another Nigerian chef, Adeparusi Damilola, also known as Chef Dammy embarked on a 120-hour cook-a-thon in Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

Chef Dammy, a 26-year-old student at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, aimed to push the boundaries of culinary endurance.

Recall that another Nigerian chef, Hilda Baci, currently holds the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon.

Baci’s record-breaking attempt took place from Thursday, May 11 to Monday, May 15, during which she cooked over 100 pots of food over four days.

In an official statement on its website, the Guinness World Records confirmed Hilda Effiong Bassey, also known as Hilda Baci, as the record holder for the longest cooking marathon (individual), with an impressive time of 93 hours and 11 minutes.

The GWR in a statement on its website, said, “Following a thorough review of all the evidence, Guinness World Records can now confirm that Hilda Effiong Bassey, better known as Hilda Baci, has officially broken the record for the longest cooking marathon (individual), with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes.”

However, Adeola’s 150-hour cook-a-thon if achieved will break Hilda Baci’s record and also set a new world record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.

Nigerians eagerly await the outcome, hoping to witness Adeola’s extraordinary achievement in setting a new Guinness World Record.
