EDO 2024: I’ll tar road to Obaseki’s ancestral home – Okpebholo

The campaign train of the All Progressives Congress, APC, weekend stopped at Uhunmwonde Local Government Area where the Governorship Candidate of the party, Senator Monday Okpebholo, promised to tar the road leading to Eguaeholor.

There he met with APC supporters from Isi North and South Wards with Ike-Nevbo, the ancestral home of Governor Godwin Obaseki being one of the several villages that make up the wards.

Okpebholo expressed shock during his ward-to-ward campaign in the area that the main road leading to the governor’s ancestral home is not motorable as the campaign team had to park most of their vehicles and trekked the distance to access the campaign ground.

“I will make sure I tar this road immediately when I resume office as the governor of Edo State. I am highly disappointed that Obaseki’s administration neglected even his ancestral home,” he stated.

At Ehor, headquarters of the LGA, he promised to revive the Ehor Juice Factory established by the Lucky Igbinedion administration, and make the Technical College in the area functional by providing the needed manpower and equipment for the school.

He said the Ehor Juice Factory, when functional, would help to prevent the losses currently being experienced by pineapple producers in Uhunmwode and other local councils of the state.

Also speaking, a leader of the party in the area former member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Hon Charles Idahosa told the people that the only road tarred in Uhunmwode was done by former governor Adams Oshiomhole and “Obaseki has turned our Technical College to garri factory.” He pleaded with the people to vote the APC on September 21 as Okpebholo has promised to better the life of Uhunmwode people.

The Director General of the Edo APC Governorship Campaign Council, Senator Matthew Urhoghide appealed to the people to vote for the APC noting that both Edo North and Central have all agreed with the Esan agenda, hence their choice of Senator Okpebholo as their party candidate. He said he believed in Monday Okpebholo as a good candidate that will listen to the yearnings of the people.

Canvassing votes for Okpebholo, Senator Oshiomhole said he brought Okpebholo to them so that they could hear from him what he intends to do for Uhunmwode people.

In Ugoneki, Egbede/Ohuan ward, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu told the people that Governor Obaseki claimed that he came from Uhunmwode and for eight years he did nothing for the local government.

He urged them not to vote PDP on September 21, adding that the APC government will provide water, electricity, tarred roads and provide light for them when they come to power.

Five candidates adopt Okpebholo

Meanwhile, the Edo governorship race assumed a new dimension, weekend, as the leadership and candidates of five political parties adopted Okpebholo and called on their supporters to vote for the APC.

The five political parties are the National Rescue Movement, NRM; Alliance Peoples Movement, APM; Zenith Labour Party, ZLP; Social Democratic Party, SDP; and Action Democratic Party, ADP.

They were received at the State Secretariat of the APC by Okpebholo; his running mate, Hon Dennis Idahosa; Acting State Chairman of the party, Emperor Jarret Tenebe; Secretary of the party, Lawrence Okah; Director General of the Edo APC Governorship Campaign Council, Senator Uroghide among others.

Why we’re adopting Okpebholo – Five candidates

On why they took the move, the NRM Leader, Hon Sam Arase, said: “As Edo state marks 33 years of our existence, we the assemblies of registered political parties in Edo State haven seen and watched carefully the campaign activities of the All Progressives Congress, haven listened to their manifesto, we carefully watched what the candidate has in stock for the people of Edo State, we specially took one thing into cognizance and that is when he talked about how he will take care of the bastardized educational system in the state.

“ Education is very paramount in whatever you are doing. Today we are talking because we are educated, we can read and write because we are educated. He told the people of the state that all the schools that are underdeveloped will be developed if he becomes the governor of the state. We came back home and decided to come here today as members of the National Rescue Movement, including our candidate, Dr Dennis Osahon, the Alliance Peoples Movement candidate, Zenith Labour Party candidate, Social Democratic Party candidate and the Action Democratic Party candidate to work together with the APC. All our candidates, having discussed with them and the leadership of our parties, we have decided to vote en masse for the APC.

“What we want is the growth and development of this state, we want Edo to come back to its feet again, we want Edo people to know that they will elect a man who means well for them because of his antecedents which we are happy about.”

Responding, Okpebholo said he would run an all inclusive government, implement every item on his manifesto and turn the state into a huge construction site.

He said: “I am not the only candidate that is contesting right now, there is something special about me that they have seen, they have seen the capacity in me, they have seen me as somebody who can actually move Edo State forward.”

On his part, Tenebe said the party would not take the generous support of the parties for granted, which was an indication that they share APC’s vision that the state needs to move forward.

Also, Uroghide said their generous support for the APC would be rewarded.
