June 12: Tinubu eulogizes MKO Abiola in Democracy Day speech
“We can easily recall the sacrifice and martyrdom of Chief MKO Abiola, the custodian of the sacred mandate that was so cruelly annulled.”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Monday poured encomiums on Moshood Abiola (MKO), the winner of the annnuled 12 June 1993 presidential election.
Mr Tinubu, while addressing Nigerians in his Democracy Day speech, praised the late Mr Abiola for not surrending his mandate which eventually led to his death in military detention.
“We can easily recall the sacrifice and martyrdom of Chief MKO Abiola, the custodian of the sacred mandate that was so cruelly annulled.
“He sacrificed his life in unyielding, patriotic defense of the ideals of democracy as symbolized in his choice, by his fellow countrymen and women, as their duly-elected President,” the Nigerian president said.
Mr Tinubu’s predecessor, ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, had declared 12 June as Nigeria’s Democracy Day and post-humously awarded Nigeria’s highest honour, GCFR, to Mr Abiola.
