KASU lecturers to embark on 2-week warning strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in one of Nigerian universities, Kaduna State University (KASU), has resolved to embark on a two weeks warning strike over unresolved issues bothering on welfare.
In a letter addressed to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abdullahi Musa and signed by Chairman Dr. Peter Adamu and Secretary Dr. Peter Waziri, the union stated that the decision was made during a congress meeting held on Thursday. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) obtained the letter.
The lecturers highlighted several unresolved issues prompting the strike, including the nonpayment of salaries for five months (from May to September 2022), partial payment for September 2017, and other withheld salaries. Additionally, they cited the lack of Earned Academic Allowances from 2018 to the present, pension remittances from 2009 to 2019, and the absence of Group Life Insurance for deceased academic staff since 2019.
According to the letter, the strike received approval from the ASUU National Executive Council, which is set to meet at the University of Ibadan from August 2 to 4, 2024.
The warning strike is a bid by KASU lecturers to compel the resolution of these longstanding issues and secure their welfare.
