KWASU-ASUU awards scholarships to four indigent students
The Kwara State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has recently awarded four indigent students scholarships under its Indigent Students Scholarship Scheme.
In a statement signed by the chairman of the ASUU branch, Comrade Shehu Abdulganiyu, Salau and made available to NEWS FLASH today, the Union said the good gesture extended to the selected brightest indigent students was in consonance with its philosophy as it launched the indigent scholarship in 2021-2022 since it joined National body of the Union (ASUU).
The National Executive Council had at its meeting of 3rd and 4th February, 2018 held at Gombe State University had instituted a scholarship scheme for students in Nigerian public varsities, the statement added.
According to the chairman, the selection of the beneficiaries followed a due process and was a product of the recommendation of a Committee set up to strictly consider a laid down criteria in arriving at the decisions.
The beneficiaries who were selected among the brightest indigents are Muyideen Alaro, Musa of Faculty of Law and Temitope Odunayo, Babalola of Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences for 2023/2024 edition each of who is recommended for N200,000 as national award. Others are Emmanuel Aanu, Ajayi of Faculty of Engineering and Technology and Ibraheem Olusola, Musa of Pure and Applied Sciences recommended for N100,000 each.
During the presentation of the awards, the chairman stated that the award was earlier pegged at N100,000 but had to be upwardly reviewed to N200,000 in order to cushion the the adverse effects of the subsidy removal and hike in tuition fees of varsities across the country.
Comrade Salau encouraged the beneficiaries to reciprocate the gesture, sustain and improve on their impressive academic records to an enviable height while restating the Union’s commitment to ensuring that indigent but brilliant students are not denied quality education.
