PDP NWC locked in meeting over Rivers Crisis, others

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) are currently meeting to discuss the state of the party and the crisis rocking the Rivers State chapter.

The meeting is holding at the national headquarters of the party in Abuja ahead of preparation for the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, later in the month.

The party leaders are said to meeting to deliberate and aggregate issues to be presented before NEC.

There is also the issue of the renewed hostility between the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike, over the party structure in the state.

The NWC meeting is coming after the Congresses in some states where the tenure of the State Executives expired.

The conduct of the congresses and the way forward would also be discussed at the meeting, according to party insiders.

The situation in Rivers has pitched Governors elected on the platform of the party, against the NWC, which seems to favour Wike as the leader of the party.

The PDP governors had publicly backed Fubara as the leader of the party and called for a review of the Rivers Congresses that favoured Wike as leader of the party.

The Governors support for Fubara had angered Wike, who on August 31, threatened to “Put fire” in any state where the governors interfere in the politics of Rivers.

The PDP Governors’ Forum had also condemned Wike’s threat as irresponsible and uncalled for.

Party leaders present at the meeting include, acting National Chairman, Umar Iliya Damagum, National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba.

Others are National Organizing Secretary Umar Bature; National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade; and Deputy National Chairman, South, Taofeek Arapaja, among others.
