Retaining Victor Osimhen last summer regrettable – Napoli

Napoli Sporting Director, Mauro Moliso, has conceded that the club made an error in retaining Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen last summer despite numerous offers.

Osimhen, a key player for the Super Eagles, became one of Europe’s most coveted strikers after an outstanding 2022/23 season. He led Napoli to their first Serie A title in over 30 years, netting 26 league goals and claiming the top scorer award.

The 25-year-old attracted interest from top clubs including Chelsea, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, and Liverpool.

Despite this interest, Osimhen’s significant €130 million release clause deterred many potential buyers, with PSG being the only club still showing interest.

Currently, Napoli are struggling to sell the striker, as several clubs have withdrawn due to financial constraints.

In an interview with Sportitalia, Moliso admitted that Napoli could have capitalized on lucrative offers for Osimhen last season but chose to retain their star player.

“We made some mistakes in Osimhen’s management. I arrived in Naples in mid-July and was aware of a very high offer from one of the biggest teams in Europe. In hindsight, we might have sold him,” Moliso stated.

Osimhen, who joined Napoli from Lille in the summer of 2020 for a club record fee of €70 million plus €10 million in bonuses, is back in training with the Serie A champions, awaiting clarity on his future.
