Stray bullet kills businessman in Kebbi during violent protest
A businessman was killed by a stray bullet during a violent protest in Yauri local government area of Kebbi State.
The bullet, allegedly fired by marine police near the Yauri River, struck the victim while he was in his shop selling plastics.
Malam Umar Bako Yelwa, a local resident, who spoke to Vanguard, noted that the protest escalated when demonstrators blocked the federal highway, causing a major disruption to traffic entering Yauri town.
In an attempt to disperse the crowd, marine police reportedly fired shots, resulting in a stray bullet fatally wounding the plastic seller whose identity is yet to be ascertained.
Efforts to obtain a statement from the Nigeria Police Force’s Kebbi State Command were unsuccessful, as the police spokesperson, SP Nafiu Abubakar, did not respond to calls or text messages seeking comment.
Meanwhile, the situation in the state capital, Birnin Kebbi, remains calm following the protests that have affected various parts of the town.
