Mass wedding: Kano govt uncovers pregnant women, HIV patients, others

The Kano State Hisbah Board has hinted that the state will soon promulgate a law that will enforce pre-marital screening before wedlock for all residents.

The Director General of the board, Abba Sufi, who spoke on the recent screening conducted on intended couples for a mass wedding, said that during the screening, pregnant women, HIV/AIDS positive and so many with liver problems were discovered.

According to him, those found with diseases like HIV were counselled while those with other ailments that could be treated were put on medication.

He said, “The discovery has proven to all the importance of the pre-marital screening, and this has made it important for us not to take it lightly, because had it not been for the screening only God knows the number of children that are going to be born as sickle cell patients, and so many diseases will also be transmitted among people.”

Sufi added that in Islam, it was haram (forbidden) for pregnant women to get married, adding that so far the board had completed the screening of 1,600 people from the 44 LGAs of the state.

Recall that the state government earmarked over N800m for the conduct of the planned mass wedding which is to be held in the middle of this month.

Damages: Court orders Kano govt to pay N30bn over demolition

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has ordered Kano State Government to pay the Incorporated Trustees of Massallacin Eid Shop Owners the sum N30 billion as compensation for unlawful demolition of their shops without following due processes laid down by law.

Recall that shopping malls around Kano Eid Ground were in June demolished by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf-led administration that tagged the buildings as illegal structures.

However, the traders under the auspices of the Incorporated Trustees of Massallacin Eid Shop Owners challenged the demolition at the Federal High Court.

The presiding judge, Justice Samuel Amobeda on Friday also said that the action of the Kano State Government against the Applicants is barbaric and unconstitutional.

Tribunal: NNPP to appeal judgement sacking Kano Gov, says lawyer

The lawyer of the New Nigerian Peoples’ Party in Kano State, Bashir Yusuf Muhammad Tudun Wada has said that the party would appeal against the judgment of the Governorship Elections Petition Tribunal.

Tudun Wada made the declaration while fielding questions from newsmen shortly after the tribunal gave its judgment.

The tribunal on Wednesday sacked Abba Kabiru Yusuf of the NNPP as the State governor and declared Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress winner of the March 18 election.

“The tribunal has delivered its own judgment, we are going to consult our clients and I can assure you that we are going to appeal against this judgment.

“Because it is a judgment which we felt does not manifest the justice of the matter and I can assure you this decision will be set aside on appeal. It is not a new thing if you look at the decision that has been taken by the Tribunal in Osun state is almost the same as this one. That the tribunal without evidence can go and look at the document that was tendered before it. I can assure you this judgment will not see the light of the day in the Court of Appeal by God’s grace,” Tudun Wada said.

Tribunal: Ganduje breaks silence over sacking of Kano gov

Abdullahi Ganduje, national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has urged the residents of the state to maintain peace following the verdict of the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

In response to the ruling issued on September 20 affirming Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the APC as the legitimately elected governor of the state, Ganduje, who spoke with reporters in his Abuja home, advised the residents of Kano state to maintain their composure and promised them that business will soon resume as usual.

Recall that the APC had challenged the declaration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP as the winner of the March 18th, 2023 governorship election.

Ganduje who was flanked by Gawuna and a former governor of the state, Senator Kabir Gaya also expressed confidence that people will now be free to go about their businesses without fear of intimidation.

Also reacting, Gawuna, the APC candidate adjudged to have won the election by the tribunal promised to continue the legacy of the immediate past administration of Ganduje, where he served as deputy governor.

He equally appealed to the people to go after their works and businesses peacefully, declaring the judgement as the will of “Allah”.

Tribunal: Kano commissioner issues de@th threat to judges

The Kano State Commissioner for Lands, Adamu Kibiya, says judges hearing governorship election petitions but allegedly collected bribes should choose between the money and their lives, SolaceBase reported.

Aliyu issued the threat to the judges presiding over the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on Thursday while speaking during a solidarity protest organized by the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), shortly after a special prayer.

During his address to NNPP members, Adamu Aliyu stated, “Any judge that allows himself to be used and collect bribes and pass judgment that is not right, we want to tell him he must choose between his life and the bribe money he collected.”

A video of the commissioner issuing the threat has gone viral on social media, though he spoke in Hausa throughout the speech.

The statement has sent shockwaves through the state’s political landscape, raising serious concerns about the impartiality and safety of the judges overseeing the election dispute.

The election in question pertains to the governorship seat, for which Abba Yusuf of the NNPP is being challenged by Nasiru Gawuna, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The tribunal has yet to announce a date for its judgment.

Aliyu’s remarks took a more ominous turn as he suggested that the consequences of an unfavourable judgment would be dire.

“You have seen the conflict (banditry) in Zamfara, Kaduna, and Katsina,” he warned. “I swear because of this governorship seat, everyone will die. The conflict that will start in Kano will be more deadly than the ones in those states and Borno.”

This alarming statement has drawn strong criticism from various quarters, with calls for immediate action to ensure the safety of the judges and the integrity of the electoral process.

The issuance of death threats against tribunal judges, alongside allegations of bribery, has cast a shadow over the fairness and legality of the ongoing election dispute. It remains to be seen how authorities will respond to these disturbing developments, and what impact they will have on the tribunal’s proceedings.

NNPP crisis: Court halts Kwankwaso’s expulsion, ex-national chairman Alkali quits party

High Court in Kano presided over by Justice Usman Mallam Na’abba has restrained members of the group loyal to the Board of Trustees of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) from acting as officials of the party or suspending/expelling its presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The injunction followed a suit no K/M1157/2023 of the 4th day of September 2023, filed by the party against the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, former National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Agbo Major and 16 others said to have been filed on August 30th, 2023 and deposed to by one Hashimu Suleiman.

It also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising the “purported suspension (of Kwankwaso) pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice, while adjourning to October 5, 2023.

The injunction which was issued on September 4, is coming just as the former national chairman of the party, Prof. Ahmed Rufai Alkali formally resigned his membership of the party, saying the crisis rocking the party appears to have no end in sight.

Alkali said in his letter of resignation made available to The Nation that parties in the crisis have refused to allow elders of the party to mediate with a view to finding a lasting solution to the crisis.

Prof Alkali, who resigned from his chairmanship of the party in March, said he had hope then that his resignation was an opportunity for the party to move ahead and move fast to consolidate on the indisputable gains made during the last 2023 General Elections and prepare for the forthcoming elections.

He said: “Unfortunately, in the last few weeks, the party has slipped deeper and deeper into avoidable crises and conflicts that have led to several cases of suspension and counter-suspension of key leaders of the party, acrimonious press war, accusations and counter-accusations, which regrettably has led to the fictionalisation of the party.

“After the historic merger of the party in March 2022, together with other astute, highly dedicated, hardworking and loyal members of the party, we put in place a robust political structure nationwide.

“The National Working Committee (NWC) forged cohesion among our members and created a formidable national platform that fielded candidates for all elective offices from the State Houses of Assembly to National Assembly, Governorship and the Presidency. I am proud to be part of that Dream Team.

“It is on record that within a period of less than one year and despite the limited time corridor from the merger to the General Elections, the party won elections in the Governorship, National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly seats.

“I voluntarily stepped aside as the National Chairman of the NNPP shortly after the general election this year to give room for new hands and fresh ideas in order to advance the party forward.

“As far I was concerned, I never believed in the culture of sitting tight in leadership positions nor that I was indispensable. The New Nigeria we all aspire to achieve must be built on a solid foundation of dedication, hard work, resilience and personal sacrifice.

“However, the recent disturbing developments in the NNPP with the emergence of factions working against each other is really unfortunate and counter-productive. Sadly, there appears to be no end in sight in this needless war of attrition.

Addressing newsmen at the Party National Secretariat on Tuesday, September 5, the acting national chairman of the party, Alhaji Kawu Ali, whose address was read by the national auditor, Oladipo Johnson blamed some unnamed external forces scared of the 2027 general election as those responsible for what is happening in the party.

He said: “The results of our investigations have made it very clear that some external forces, scared of the 2027 elections, are behind these recalcitrant persons and their shenanigans and their main target no doubt is His Excellency, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso PhD, FNSE.

Kano govt slashes school reg. fees by 50% for indigenes in State-owned tertiary institutions

The Kano State government has reduced the registration fees of government-owned tertiary institutions by 50 per cent for indigenes.

It should be recalled that the state Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Yusuf Kofar Mata, made the disclosure on Monday while briefing newsmen.

According to the commissioner, the government took the decision, considering the economic hardship caused by the fuel subsidy removal, so as to alleviate the challenges of parents.

He said the reduction affects all Kano State indigenes studying regular courses for the 2023/2024 academic session at institutions, which include Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil; Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano; and Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education.

Others are Kano State Polytechnic, Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies, Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Danbatta, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso College of Advance and Remedial Studies, Tudun Wada, and Kano State College of Education.

He explained that the decision is in line with the state government’s commitment to the development of education.

Restating the state government’s commitment to education development, Kofar Mata noted that this can be seen in the restoration of foreign scholarships for over 1,000 students, which would be flagged off sooner rather than later.

EFCC, CCB probe Kano anti-graft agency chair investigating Ganduje

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Code of Conduct Bureau are probing the Chairman, Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission, Muhyi Rimingado, over his stewardship under the administration of the embattled former Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.

Rimingado, who is probing Ganduje, now the National Chairman of the ruling the All Progressives Congress, for alleged corruption over a viral video showing the ex-governor allegedly receiving kickbacks in dollars from a contractor, had vowed to investigate the video and bring Ganduje to book if found guilty.

While a letter by the EFCC, obtained by our correspondent on Saturday, asked Rimingado to direct the PCACC’s Director of Finance and Accounts to appear for an interview at its headquarters in Jabi, Abuja on August 29, a correspondent by the CCB, also seen by our Sunday PUNCH, requested for documents concerning his stewardship.

Both federal agencies asked the PCACC’s chair to furnish them with financial records and details of forfeited properties.

“In view of the above, you are requested to kindly release the Director of Finance and Accounts to report for an interview with the undersigned through the team leader AFF/TC at Plot 301/302 Institution and Research District Jabi, along Airport Road, Abuja on Monday, 29th August, 2023 by 10:00 hours,” the EFCC letter read.

“He should come along with the following information; details of total funds released to your office by the Office of the Accountant General of Kano state from 2019 to 2021 fiscal year.

“Details of total funds released to your office by the Kano state ministry of local government from 2019 to 2021 including contracts executed and details of beneficiary accounts,” the correspondence added.

The CCB letter, however, read in part, “Consequently, you are kindly requested to furnish the Bureau with Certified True Copies of detailed information on the following: All contractual undertakings by the commission from 2016 to date.

“All records of recoveries, forfeiture and management of the same from 2016 — date; records of all financial allocations to the commission, including donor agency funds from 2016 to date, status of all the commission’s buildings across the local government of the state.”

The PUNCH reports that in 2022, Rimingado was sacked by the former Kano State governor on allegations bordering on abuse of office.

However, on June 21, 2023, the incumbent governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, approved Rimingado’s reinstatement as PCACC chair, honouring an order of an industrial court that was earlier disobeyed by Ganduje.

When contacted, the spokespersons for the EFCC and the CCB, Wilson Uwujaren and Veronica Kato, respectively, did not respond to phone calls and text messages by our correspondent.
