Audit: Kano uncovers 13-year-old pupil, 3,233 other illegal workers

The Kano State Government said it has uncovered 3,234 workers illegally earning salaries in the state public service.

Similarly, the government said it discovered that a 13-year-old pupil and members of the National Youth Service Corps were among the ineligible workers recruited by the immediate past administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

The Secretary to the State Government, Dr Abdullahi Bichi, disclosed this while addressing newsmen on the report of the committee set up by the state government to investigate the illegal recruitment.

Governor Kabiru Yusuf had directed the immediate suspension of salaries of over 10,000 public servants who were recruited at the tail end of the administration of his predecessor.

According to him, the committee discovered that despite the hastened employment exercise, the former administration failed to capture the financial implication in the 2023 appropriation.

“It is sad to discover that the majority of those recruited did not go through the former screening exercise while some got the job with fake certificates,” he added.

He revealed that part of the recommendations approved by the government included offering 9,332 with relevant qualifications and employment opportunities into the service.

He said appropriate sanctions would be meted out to those affected in line with civil service rules.

“Those that will be sanctioned include the mother of a 13-year-old girl who confirmed to the committee that she had been receiving salaries through the bank account of her mother who is a worker in the public service,” Bichi added.
