End japa, Group tells Tinubu

A group of Nigerian youths, under the aegis of Eternal Youth Fellowship, Hotonu, has urged President Bola Tinubu to work out an end to the exodus of Nigerian youths abroad, in what is now popularly known as japa in local parlance.

The fellowship, in a statement signed by its president, Olumide Ajayi, on Sunday, said the current situation in which young professionals were leaving the country called for concern.

“The critical sectors in the country need urgent overhauling. Once this is done, it would go a long way to address some of the challenges we are faced with as a nation.

“We are using this medium to appeal to the current administration to address important issues that concern the youth. These include creating more jobs, reversing the hike in tuition fees across some learning institutions and most importantly formulating policies that will address the japa syndrome among the youthful population.”

Highlighting an array of programmes to commemorate the fellowship’s 20th anniversary scheduled to hold in 2024, Ajayi explained that the go-getter attitude and commitment of its members had sustained and made it progress over the years.

“In all these years, we have seen it all – success and failures, highs and lows, celebrations and crisis, everything. But one thing that we never did was to ‘give up’. Our vision in the next 10 years as part of the body of Christ, is to see every young person in every people group, in every nation having the opportunity to make an informed decision to be a follower of Jesus Christ and become a part of a local church.

“We will be glad to see our teens and youths achieve personal development goals, enhance their communication skills, participate in governance, gain work experience, acquire new skills, learn responsibility and accountability, develop a greater sense of condense, and become empowered. But we would never have been able to picture this successful journey without everyone,” the statement added.
